Screen Printing

In art and textiles we have been screen printing. I will use this technique as part of my identity piece. these are the steps of screen printing.
A screen print is made of a piece of porous, finely woven fabric called mesh is stretched over a frame of aluminium or wood. Originally silk was used, now most of the mesh is made of nylon. Areas of the screen are blocked off with a stencil, which is a negative of the image to be printed; that is, the open spaces are where the ink will appear.
An image on the screen can also be created by a photographic process. Whereby a screen has a photographic image printed on to it in negative.
The screen is placed on top of paper of fabric. Ink is placed on top of the screen. the operator then uses a squeegee (rubber blade) to squeeze ink through the mesh. the screen is lifted off leaving the ink on the paper or the fabric.
Textile items are printed in multi-colour designs using different stencils and screens.
If the design is no longer needed, then the screen can be reclaimed, that is cleared off all ink and used again. With water based inks, this is easily done by washing with water. The stencil is removed and thrown away.

Identity Piece

In textiles and Art we have started to make our own artefact that represents us. For my piece I have chosen to base it on Andy Warhol and I’ve chosen to do a wall hanging. I chose Andy Warhol because his work is really colourful sand i think that’s the best way that represents me. I chose to do a wall hanging because I think there are many different ways of doing it.
this is how I’m hoping to plan my artefact:
1. make a wooden frame
2. get a 1m by 1m piece of calico and tie elastic bands around it to make a pattern
3. tie dye the piece of fabric in purple dye overnight
4. take off the elastic bands and iron out the fabric
5. screen print my face onto the piece of fabric and go over the outline with silver lining
6. make little pendants using the lazar machine
7. get a real necklace and stick the pendants on it to make it look like a charm necklace
8. stick the necklace onto the neck of my screen print
9. stick it all on the wooden frame and add little bits of glitter and sequins to make it look nicer.

Inspire Videos

In media we had to make a short film for year 4s as part of their work week. In my group we had to go to the bakery and interview them. The purpose of this was to show year 4s how literacy and numeracy work in the real world. On the 3rd April our films were due in and a few members of inspire came in so we could present our videos to them. We hadn’t quite finished it so we were really scared to present it. when it was our turn to present, I was really surprised because a member of staff from our school had kindly helped out and finished it off for us. I was relived that he done this. It would have been so embarrassing if we hadn’t got it finished. Next time, I know that I have to meet my deadlines. The work was really difficult but I know I should have been more focused in editing. I think we did really well whilst filming in the bakery, but it was our editing that brought us down. Overall it was a really fun project. :)
